Sri Lanka has become a bit of a theme in the last couple of weeks. Here in Kandy, just by my guesthouse, people walk home after shopping along the railway. Railways are the life and soul of the sub-continent. You wouldn't see this in Australia!

Train Journeys – Kolkata to Varanasi
Taking a train in India is an unforgettable and without a doubt, cultural, experience. The stations are bustling places full of life, and you know what? So are the trains themselves. Whilst taking the train in India, I have usually taken second class sleeper where overnight journeys have been concerned. And that has been most …
A Night Out in Northcote
Last week it was time to hit the town and head out into Melbourne for dinner and a show. Nothing’s better than dinner and a show, right? I was lucky enough to have won two tickets to see ‘Behind the Seams’ at the Wesley Ann in Northcote, featuring two musical acts interspersed with some improvisation. …
Missing Backpacker Concern
Hi all just a brief post today, I am quite under the weather at the moment 😦 I wanted to share a link with you to another blog post from a blog called 'My Wanderlist' I recently discovered. Brad writes some great stuff, but this blog post of a couple of days ago was worrying. …
Sunday Spotlight: Lahore
During the week someone lay down the challenge to me to write about Lahore, so here I am responding to the challenge. Now, Pakistan is probably not right at the top of anyone’s travel itinerary right now. It’s not really the safest of countries and hasn’t been for a few years. I went ten years …

Foto Friday – Smiles in Mali
I thought I would do a regular, short Friday spot where I would present one photo and let people comment. 2007, I went trekking at the Dogon Escarpment in Mali. Stunning place, where the Earth shifted at some point dramatically and there is a giant cliff in the middle of nowhere. Villages on top and …
Train Journeys – Kandy to Colombo
It’s Thursday and I’m taking to the tracks again. This time I’m headed to Sri Lanka, a place I visited in early 2013 with my wife and we stayed about 10 days there, mostly in Kandy. We took just the one train trip whilst there, although more were planned, but that day turned out to …
Short Journeys: Central Asia
Hi all. Just a quick mid-week post to let you all know that I have combined my Short Journeys: Kazakhstan & Short Journeys: Kyrgyzstan & Uzbekistan books together to make Short Journeys: Central Asia. It seemed a logical thing to do, to pair them together in case someone was interested in all three countries. This …
