Hi folks. Train Journeys returns today for a quick look at a steam train that operates in Victoria, not too far from Melbourne town. The Mornington Railway runs a service on broad gauge three Sundays a month from Moorooduc to Mornington and back, three trains on the Sunday in each direction.

It’s not a long or particularly scenic journey, however it is a working steam railway and that means lots of fun. From and to Mornington there is a courtesy bus which is free to the Mornington Railway station so if you are down on the Mornington Peninsula, a very pretty and popular part of the state an hour and a half from Melbourne, then it’s something fun to do on a Sunday. At Moorooduc there’s a bit of a museum too.

The journey is around seventeen minutes each way. I took the train on their ‘Halloween Special’ – a couple of weeks early – and the conductors and volunteers (all staffed and run by volunteers) dressed up in Halloween garb which was a bit of fun. The carriages all have booths which have been well restored and even the engine itself was done up pretty special for the occasion.
It’s $18 return, $11 one way. Puffing Billy is $50 plus return for an adult, and although it’s a more fulfilling experience (Puffing Billy is), taking the train on Mornington Railway is also very worthwhile.

You can find out more on their website – Mornington Railway. May the Journey Never End!

…seven years in Melbourne and I had never heard of this! Great – it’s added to ‘the list’!!
wait Tim – are you a train enthusiast???????: and I never knew?
