Accommodation Review – Cosmic Guesthouse, Hong Kong

To stop for a second wrapping all my accommodation reviews into one post for this once, I felt that Cosmic Guesthouse deserved its own review. Not because it was the most amazing place I’ve ever stayed, neither was it the most dire. But it certainly is an institution.

I mean, it’s not often that you find your guesthouse many floors up in a skyscraper. Well, Mirador Mansion (where you’ll find Cosmic) is not quite THAT high, but it’s no eight-storey block of flats either. You’ll find Cosmic on the twelfth floor.

Mirrador Mansion has a number of buildings and an interesting history you can read a little about HERE. Not just guesthouses I think there are still many apartments where people live as well and it’s like a little community within a community.

The area is excellent for the tourist. Mall across the roads, three subway stations not far by, lively nightlife, pubs, the only thing that bothered me was the humidity which even in May is somewhat stifling in Hong Kong.

Most importantly, Hong is an expensive city and Cosmic Guesthouse provides a bit of relief from the high prices. I took what was a single room –  although they call it a ‘double standard’ with no window. It is their cheapest room. Today it costs 140 Hong Kong Dollars, which is around $US18. TV, Bed, air conditioning, toilet and shower included and I think wifi.

The room is a cupboard. You have almost no room to walk two steps inside your actual room, however you do have everything you need, a unique location and plenty of money left over in your wallet to spend on whatever tempts you in Hong Kong. And I did get the cheapest room they offer – remember there are other rooms, some of them they are calling ‘boutique’, so it doesn’t just cater to the budget end of the scale.

Check-in – you might have to wait a little while to check in, but it’s a colourful little area with kids and pets and the like. Seriously, although the room isn’t the most appealing, staying at Cosmic Guesthouse or somewhere like it is just FUN. Half the time I had no idea what was going on with all the comings and goings, but it didn’t matter. A place with character!
