Sunday Spotlight – Quebec City

qc 8

Contrary to what followers of my blog might be led to believe considering what I have been posting for years, I have actually been to the American Continent. And so I will be shining the spotlight over in that direction today and maybe next week too.

When it comes to Canada, and to Quebec (Province) people think of Montreal, which is a great city, no doubt, but if time allows and you don’t mind a bit of a bus journey, head on to Quebec City for a few days, because it’s really worth it.

It’s not a huge city. It’s not New York, Chicago or even Toronto. Heck – I’m only guessing but I’d say Ottawa is bigger (and also really nice by the way!), but Quebec City is grand, with some amazing architecture and great parks too.

Located on the impressive St Lawrence River, I found parts of Quebec almost citadel like, with grand gates, wide parks (especially riverside) and really fresh air. There are a couple of stunning churches and some of the government buildings with their green rooves left a firm impression in my mind from a wonderful city. There are awesome bridges too, and a relaxed air which permeates through the city.

It’s very European for North America, perhaps the most European city of the continent. To go along with its amazing buildings it definitely feels like a city connected to the arts, with painters selling their wares down little alleys.

There are a number of large, somewhat baroque (ok, I admit I am guessing as to what is baroque! ;)) churches in the city too. Inside the decorations and use of white and gold is quite stunning. the Notre Dame de Quebec Basilica is one of the best examples of this kind of church/cathedral.

It’s not chock full of specific sites, but it is an utter pleasure to walk around, take photos and just ‘be’ in. It’s a long time since I was there, and I’m not going to direct you to any specifics today. Instead, I will let the photos talk for me!

  1. Lol! Has that been what readers are telling you? Anyway, I think you’ve been around to so many places, I’m sure you’ll get around to writing about all of it eventually. I have many others that I want to write about too but it will take time… 🙂

  2. The entire Canada is amazing, but the Quebec province will always be my favorite. While I lived in Canada I visited Montreal and Quebec City…both are amazing, but while in Quebec I was freezing and there was ice (not snow) everywhere hahaha so I didnt enjoy as much as I wanted! Hopefully next time I will go on summer of fall 🙂 great post! Have a great week.
