Earlier this year I was super fortunate to visit Panama and a place I had long wanted to see, the Panama Canal. It began with a trip to the Panama Canal Railway Station, where the train was waiting to take me across to the Atlantic side of the country and canal near Colon. However, waiting it was – for the weekend in the end!

So I (actually we, Graham was travelling with me) took the bus to Colon and then taxi to the locks on the Atlantic side, known as Agua Clara.

Here we watched the massive Evergreen container ship passing through the locks to continue down the canal, under the Atlantic Bridge where I presume it entered the Atlantic Ocean.

Then it was time to go to Pacific side, just outside Panama City to the Miraflores lock, again by bus!

Here there is a viewing platform too, and a Korean ship was passing through in the opposite direction to the Pacific Ocean through the Miraflores Locks.

A special day learning about this incredible piece of engineering! Thanks for popping by, May the Journey Never End!
Miraflores is definitely the best place to see and understand the Canal and the history of its construction. When I visited Panama, I also found it a bit strange to drive through the ghost towns left behind by the Americans after they withdrew from administering the Canal.
I’ve only ever read of Panama Canal when I was in the university. Thanks for sharing your photos!
Wonderful Andy, I’d like to visit there sometime after recently passing through Europe’s biggest lock in Portugal.
I found the Panama Canal fascinating too! Maggie
I have heard so much of the Panama canal in school but I’ve never been there. That is such an impressive piece of engineering!
