This was the one I was really looking forward to staying in. It looked so above its price – I paid less than $30US per night – through its pictures and website that I was sure I had the bargain of the trip. And really, I wasn’t disappointed although I probably had over-estimated the place too.
Where to start? There’s bad AND good, so let’s get the bad out of the way straight up. Firstly, the location is a fair way out of Mandalay. I looked at the map and thought it was walkable, but a long walk, but really it isn’t, especially when the sun has gone down. The thing about Mandalay as a city is, nothing is really that close together, and much of the attractions are not in town but done on day trips or tours instead. Which in some way negates the distance issue.
I spent a day exploring Mandalay and walked over 10km in that day, however also needed to use a fair few motorbike taxis as well. It’s around $3US by motorbike taxi into the centre of town. The citadel sits in the centre, and it’s around 2km each side, to give you some idea of the distances involved.
Secondly, there can be a noise issue. I was there four nights and only had it on one – and that was loud karaoke coming from somewhere. I say ‘somewhere’ because frankly the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, lots of dirt and high scrub. And then the odd building surprising all by its presence! The music was at about 11pm at night.
The room had two single beds (a twin), and although I would have preferred a double, two singles as a solo travel can be good because you can put your stuff all over the unused bed. Air conditioning which was needed, and a really good quality bathroom with no leaks and a sizeable shower. Room was a decent size too, with a desk, place to hang clothes etc.
The staff were not great at English over all, however, they try to help as best possible and one even took me out on a day trip and I only had to pay for petrol. The restaurant is absolutely sensational and worth eating at even if youre not staying at the hotel. I had all my evening meals there, and was never disappointed. Some of the best food of the trip reasonably priced if not a bargain. Just beware – there are a LOT of mosquitoes outside, and the restaurant is in covered outdoors.
I slept soundly there, the bed was comfortable and there was room service every day to keep everything spick and span! Laundry service too, not the cheapest in Myanmar but not going to break your bank either.
All in all, very happy with this place and not at all disappointed. As for Value for Money – hard to do better.
