So folks. Just a quick one today. If you recall I posted on the protests and the treatment of the protestors mid-last year. Well, things have taken a turn for the worse recently. From what I understand, the government forced a Ryan Air plane headed for Vilnius to land in Minsk instead, on board was a journalist who they regarded as not covering the protests or election favourably, who was arrested on landing. I’ve heard reports there was Belarus “KGB” on board and possibly a military jet in the sky forcing the plane to divert. It has been called a ‘state-sponsored hijacking’. Sad because I really liked the city of Minsk when I visited 2 years ago. I don’t know that tourism is going to be something returning to Belarus any time in the near future, Covid or no Covid. This world is a worry right now with events in the Middle East, and in Colombia too it seems all hell is breaking loose. Wherever you are in the world, stay safe.
Thanks for popping by. May the Journey Never End.
This is particularly sad and unfair to the Belarusian people who deserve better.
they certainly do
I’ve heard about the Palestine-Israel conflict and the marches in Colombia, but for some reason, news of Belarus seemed to have flown over my head (pun unintended). It’s a shame, because I’d hoped to go to Belarus when I was still in Europe two years ago, and even with international travel opening up this summer, it appears that there are a lot of internal conflicts in many countries to not want to go there, anyway. Stay safe, Andy!
Belarus may not be receiving many tourists for a few years i would say
State-sponsored hijacking is right.
sadly yes
I think it’s unlikely that there will be a lot of planes going to Belarus at the moment. Lots of airlines here in Europe have stopped offering flights to Belarus from what I have heard.
well i think a lot are not evening fly over or near it at the moment, which i can understand too. thanks for commenting!
This was horrendous. We were booked to go to Belarus before Covid.began.
sadly could be a long time before going to Belarus is possible. or indeed desirable.
