Howdy all and welcome to another ‘Accommodation Review’, and today it’s the amazing city of Amritsar and the place I stayed there, the ‘White House by AN’.

Some places when you book them online end up looking better in the photos on Agoda or Booking.com or whatnot than they do in person. I found choosing a place in Amritsar that I was happy with wasn’t so easy online because again like Varanasi some appeared to have a lot of clearly fake reviews and photos are almost always deceptive. Even when I take photos and look back at them they always seem to come out better than the room actually is.
Anyways, after a lot of to-ing and froing I booked the White House by AN in Amritsar. It’s a newish hotel, and it’s within the walled city of Amritsar. It meant that to get to the main feature of the city, the Golden Temple, I could walk which was the first priority for me in Amritsar. The ‘White House’ looked new, clean and had good reviews and was within probably 15-20 minutes of the temple (and the centre of town) so this was ultimately what I went for.
The cost was a fraction over $50AUD so around $33USD or so. The price was ok, there was no breakfast on offer, the staff at reception were friendly, so it all came down to the room. The room was very generous in size, it had clearly been recently revamped with new flooring and was clean, and there was a bit of desk space, a couple of cupboards, a small balcony looking down on the street which wasn’t up to much, and the best feature was probably the bed which was very big and very comfortable.

It also came with free water, room cleaning daily and a wall-mounted TV which I plugged my USBs into for a little light entertainment. It was definitely a room that you know, was not going to age well, it wasn’t a top level hotel where all the fittings and floorings etc were high quality and made to last, and the walls were all simple painted concrete, but as a room in 2023 it was a great room. The WiFi was good too. There was only one let down really – and that was the bathroom.
I was on the first floor. That’s one floor up. And I guess they only had so much space to configure but the bathroom was the opposite of the main room, because it was basically a cupboard. And a strangely-shaped cupboard at that. Like a sort of squashed triangle, the door opened in the middle of it with the sink in the middle, the toilet to the right and the shower to the left. The shower was okay, there was hot water but the water went everywhere. The door perhaps could have opened out or be a sliding door, both would have made the bathroom less pokey, but instead it opened inward and despite it having an okay modern finish and features, it wasn’t a comfortable bathroom all in all.

Having said all that, it is a really nice hotel and I was happy with my stay here. It’s price is ok, the location good and the room is spacious and comfortable. It looks outstanding online – and whilst I was happy with it, I still feel like it was a bit oversold online. Good staff, not too much noise aside from the street sounds you can’t really escape in India, meant that I would recommend it but be aware about the bathroom situation. I only saw one room of course and perhaps it was just a peculiarity of that one room. To the ratings –

A fair review. I know what you mean about looking for decent hotels beyond the photos and beneficial reviews.
Yes it’s very common isn’t it? Thanks for commenting!
